On the road, Thanksgiving travel in the air is near pre-epidemic levels

While not returning to pre-epidemic levels, US holidaymakers can expect to see more people on the roads and at the airport queue during this year’s long Thanksgiving weekend.

AAA projects that about 53.4 million people will go on vacation in the coming days, a 13% increase over 2020, and just 5% shy of the 2019 Thanksgiving travel volumes.

Of those who spend the holidays elsewhere this year, 48.3 million go to their cars and 4.1 million go to the skies because of the extensive removal of Kovid-19 restrictions and increasing consumer confidence.

Aldo Vazquez, a spokesman for AAA Utah, said those planning a trip for Thanksgiving this year should be sure to “pack your patience.”

“Travel volumes have recovered to 5% of pre-epidemic levels, and air travel has fully recovered from its dramatic decline.

Thanks in part to rising fuel costs, returning to the world is a more expensive endeavor this year.

On Tuesday, the AAA reported a nationwide average price of just $ 3.40 for a gallon of regular gasoline. But fuel costs across the Western US are significantly higher, at an average of $ 3.70 per gallon at Utah pumps.

UDOT reports that all major construction projects will be stopped over Thanksgiving weekend, and expect heavy on-road volumes on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Rising fuel prices are also affecting the cost of air travel.

Data from Adobe’s Digital Economy Index, Forbes reported earlier this monthDomestic flight rates reflected in October were just 7% lower than the 2019 level before the epidemic. Adobe tracks six transactions in the top 10 US airlines.

Flight costs have been rising since August and September, down 11% and 13% below 2019 levels, respectively. Overall, airline tickets for Thanksgiving travel can increase by about 25% compared to last year.

If your gateway to a vacation home is the newly refurbished Salt Lake City International Airport, a little planning is in order.

For those who have not yet navigated the recently renovated facility, airport spokeswoman Nancy Vollmer suggests travelers to download the SLC Airport smartphone app or contact the maps Posted to the airport’s website. Things have changed, Vollmer noted, and the larger complex means parking or drop-off through security and exit gates will take longer than ever before.

Also, domestic travelers should plan to arrive two hours ahead of their boarding time, and international passengers should be allowed three hours ahead of scheduled boarding, Vollmer says.

Vollmer said a little extra time at the airport will give him the opportunity to view the novel’s architectural, fresh art installations for the first time. Killed new shops and restaurants.

Over the past week or so, concerns have been floating around federal employee vaccine orders that could potentially lead to staff shortages for airport security and screening operations run by the Transportation Security Administration of the US Department of Homeland Security. Those orders went into effect Monday, prompting speculation that a significant number of TSA employees could slow holiday travel if they were unable to report to work under the new rules.

Matthew Yeats, Transportation Security Administration Officer, assists passengers at a security checkpoint at Salt Lake International Airport in Salt Lake City on Thursday, November 18, 2021.

But on Tuesday, TSA spokeswoman Lisa Furbstein tweeted that most of the agency’s employees had been vaccinated and that the order would not slow down the anticipated wave of holiday travelers.

“Approximately 93 percent of TSA employees follow today’s deadlines for federal employee vaccine mandate and exemption requirements,” Furbstein tweeted. “Employee vaccine mandate does not affect vacation travel.”

This is great news for Salt Lake Airport, which is expecting 25,000 passengers on Wednesday, up from 13,400 last year and shy of 26,500 in 2019. Sunday is also expected to be a high volume day at the airport.

Vollmer gave some additional tips for holiday air travelers:

  • Before leaving the airport, travelers are reminded to check the airline’s website or app to make sure the flight is on time and not delayed due to the weather.
  • Passengers are encouraged to check in electronically before leaving the airport to expedite the process once they are in the facility.
  • The SLC has three areas to check luggage depending on the airline, as well as limited SkyCap service. The SLC International Application Map shows the location of those luggage checkpoints.
  • Parking can be booked in advance for an airport parking garage or long-term facility, Here.
