Patrick Dempsey’s infamous departure during season 11 of the long-running ABC medical drama shocked fans and critics at the time. Now, Lynette Rice’s new book, “How to Save a Life: The Inside Story of Gray’s Anatomy, ”Sheds light on why Dempsey, 55, is Really Reportedly left the series.
The frequent rom-com actor was a regular series from 2005 to 2015, where he played Dr. Derek played “McDreamy” Shepherd. Ellen Pompeo (Dr. Meredith Gray) portrayed his love interest and later his wife.
Rice’s unofficial “Gray” book is described as something between Dempsey and the show’s creator Shonda Rhimes. In an excerpt released Hollywood Reporter, The book said he was “terrified of the set.”
“Valentine’s Anatomy” producer James De Parriott was brought in to help the “Valentine’s Day” star’s departure. In the book, Parriott alleged that “there were HR issues. It wasn’t sexual in any way. He was terrorizing the set. Some cast members had all kinds of PTSD with him.” “He had this grip on set, where he knew he could stop production and scare people. The network and the studio came down and we had sessions with him. I think he’s just finished the show.”
“He didn’t like the inconvenience of coming to work every day. He and Shonda were in each other’s throats, ”he claimed.
The book contains a quote from Dempsey about his behavior on the set, which reads, “It’s ten months, fifteen hours a day. You never know your schedule, so your child asks you, ‘What are you doing on Monday?’ And you go, ‘I don’t know,’ because I don’t know my schedule. It’s challenging to do for eleven years, but you should be grateful because you’re better compensated, so you can’t really complain because you don’t really have control over your schedule. Just be soft. ”
Another producer of the show, Jeanine Renshaw-Rhimes, “finally saw” the actor’s not-so-good behavior and reportedly called it “the final straw.”
“Shonda had to tell the network, ‘If he doesn’t go, I’ll go.’ No one wanted to leave him because he left the show, “Renshaw claimed.” He and Ellen [Pompeo]. Patrick is a darling. It confuses you, this business. “
