Philadelphia carjackers have been shot 3 times in 2022 by legally armed drivers

According to a local affiliate report, a teenage carjacker was shot and seriously injured in Philadelphia after attempting to steal a legally armored driver’s vehicle.

On Thursday, the third time since the start of 2022, an alleged carjacker was injured by a legal gun owner, LOVEBYLIFE 29 reported. According to local media, the two carjackers approached the 60-year-old driver at about 8pm local time on Cherokee Street in Mount Airy.

The report states that while the young man was in the process of exiting his car, the young suspect pointed a gun at his head and ordered him to hand over the car keys. But instead, the driver rammed the gun and the groups carried out a skirmish.

LOVEBYLIFE 29 reported that one of the suspects was wounded, and the pair fled after more than a dozen bullets fired at both sides. Police then chased the suspect three blocks away, where they found a 16-year-old carjacker inside a stolen jeep, police said.

The victim positively identified the boy as an armed carjacker. He was taken to the area hospital with serious injuries.

Police confirmed to LOVEBYLIFE 29 that the victim was a legitimate gun owner.

“He was not injured, but there were remains of gunshot wounds on his face,” Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small told reporters about the victim. “Just inches away. He may have been shot or killed. He’s very lucky.”

Philadelphia police arrested the accused in the shooting, and captured the video of 6 people injured

Earlier this year, a ride-share driver shot two armored carjackers and attempted to steal his vehicle while he and his customers were inside, the report said. Both the driver and his passenger were able to get out of the vehicle before the theft.

And in a separate incident, LOVEBYLIFE 29 reported that a legally armed health worker shot a man he believed was trying to carjack him. The man was sitting in his vehicle when an 18-year-old suspect fired a gun at the driver’s side. It is reported that the suspect fired through the window of his car before fleeing.

Philadelphia police have received 90 carjacking reports so far in 2022, the News Center reported. And in 2021, carjackings are up 34% compared to 2020, according to police.

On Wednesday, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Daniel Outlaw called the increase in carjacking “one of the most disturbing trends we’ve seen.”
