Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations Unveiled

LONDON (AP) – The United Kingdom will celebrate the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II with a military parade on the throne, neighborhood parties and competition to create a new dessert for platinum jubilee, Buckingham Palace said Monday.

Elizabeth will become the first British monarch to reign for seven decades on February 6, and the festivities marking the anniversary will culminate in a four-day weekend event June 2-5. It is not immediately clear which programs the 95-year-old queen will attend after doctors recently advised her to relax more.

The weekend, which includes an additional public holiday in honor of the Queen, begins Thursday, June 2, with Trooping the Color — an annual military parade marking the Queen’s official birthday.

This is followed by a Thanksgiving service honoring the Queen’s service to the UK, her other constituencies and the Commonwealth on 3 June.

In acknowledgment of the coronation – a mix of cold chicken, blackberries, mayonnaise and other ingredients are presented at the garden parties to mark the Queen’s formal ascent – the palace sponsors a platinum pudding contest to create a new dessert dedicated to the king. .

The competition is open to 8-year-old UK residents and will be judged by television chefs Mary Berry and Monica Galetti, along with Buckingham Palace chef Mark Flanagan. The winning recipe will be announced before the Jubilee weekend so it can be part of the celebrations.

About 1,400 people have already registered to host the Jubilee Luncheon on June 5, with major events taking place in London and the Eden Project in Cornwall. The Palace expects about 200,000 neighborhood events to take place across the UK

The weekend ends with a show honoring the King’s service and looking forward to the next 70 years. Dancers, musicians, military personnel and key workers “tell the story of the queen’s reign,” but the children create an image of their hopes and aspirations for the planet, the palace said.
