GOTEBURG, Sweden — On Saturday night, audiences at the Gothenburg Film Festival, the largest movie-TV event in Scandinavia, were privy to the world premiere of “The King,” a documentary by Swedish journalist Karin of Klintberg about He was given an unprecedented award. Access to follow King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden for two years.

REinvent International Sales has acquired the worldwide rights to the film, which will be released in Sweden next month. SF Studios is co-producing and will distribute in the Nordics.

“The King” is produced by Stina Gardell and Petra Måhl for Af Nexiko in association with SF Studios, the Swedish Film Institute and public broadcast network SVT.

It wasn’t an easy ride for AF Klintberg, who the Kings team said, as she spent nearly two hours making small talk with him when she first met him, saying yes. gave

She filmed for a while, she says, then didn’t hear from Carl XVI Gustaf for six months, prompting her to seek treatment. “My therapist said, ‘Well, you have to ask him if he agrees with this plan,'” she recalls. Because he never said ‘yes’. When I asked, he said ‘no’ and then we continued shooting.

He didn’t even ask to have dinner with her, and it’s not like they’re best friends anymore. “I’m not allowed to have his mobile phone number,” she said.

When she asked him if he wanted to watch a movie, he told her: “It’s enough to look at yourself in the mirror every day.”

While Klentberg is promoting the film – the first time anyone worldwide has been given this kind of access to royalties for a film, she says – she’s now looking for her next king. I don’t mean a literal king,” he said.

With the Harry and Meghan Netflix documentary and Prince Harry’s recent book, interest in royalty is clearly on the rise. Now Sweden has to wait.

“The King” is set to premiere in Swedish theaters in February 2023 on the 50th anniversary of King Carl XVI Gustaf’s ascension to the throne, making him the longest-serving regent in Swedish history.
