Several Republican members of Congress publicly urged Americans to shoot down a Chinese spy balloon that made its way across the US this week, before the Biden administration sent fighter jets to bring it down.
The call was led by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green of Georgia, a close ally of Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who has a history of drawing outrage for past comments and associations with white nationalists.
“Literally every regular person I know is talking about how to shoot down a Chinese spy balloon. It would be great if an average Joe shot it down because China Joe wouldn’t do that. ” Green said in one Tweet on Friday.. “Regular Americans can do better than the government and actually care about our country.”

Officials in North Carolina urged people not to try to shoot the balloons.

Earlier in the week, police in the Tar Heel state issued a warning to residents against shooting down the balloon, which was eventually brought down after it reached the Atlantic Ocean later in the day.
Police in Gastonia, North Carolina said, “Please don’t shoot him with your handgun to bring him down on your own.” WSHIOTV7 reported.
