Republicans want Biden’s non-binary aide, Sam Brinton, charged with theft

A group of House Republicans is demanding the resignation of a non-binary official in the Biden administration over allegations that he stole a suitcase from an airport in September.

Rep. Andrew Clyde of Georgia and 15 other Republicans were sent letter called on Energy Department Secretary Jennifer Granholm on Tuesday to fire Sam Brinton, the agency’s deputy assistant administrator for spent fuel and waste disposal.

Brinton was charged with stealing a purse valued at $2,325 in Minneapolis. Paul Airport on September 16.

“We demand Sam Brinton’s resignation and ask that you set aside petty politics and appoint only the most qualified and dedicated individuals to impact America’s energy sector,” the Republicans’ letter to Granholm said.

Brinton, who became one of the federal government’s first non-gender-binary officials when she started at the Department of Energy’s Nuclear Power Division earlier this year, has been placed on leave.

“As an appointed official, Sam Brinton represents your department and the United States. It is simply not possible for someone to represent American values and violate the nation’s criminal laws at the same time,” said the letter, signed by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green of Georgia and Louis Gohmert of Texas.

“Brinton’s actions and your department’s lack of transparency in handling this matter reflect poorly on the Department of Energy and raise concerns about the Biden administration’s priorities in appointing senior officials. It is necessary that we do not let it go,” he continues.

The 35-year-old British man initially denied stealing the expensive bag, but later admitted the theft and said he was tired.

Law enforcement officials said they saw surveillance footage of him carrying the suitcase on at least two trips to Washington, D.C., on Sept. 18 and Oct. 9. –
