Rescuers fight bitter cold and time as Turkey, Syria quake deaths near 8,000


The death toll from two major earthquakes and multiple aftershocks in Turkey and Syria has risen to nearly 8,000, officials said, as aid workers combed through debris for survivors in freezing temperatures.

Turkish Vice President Fuat Okte told reporters on Wednesday morning that 5,894 people had been killed and 34,810 injured. At least 812 people were killed and 1,449 wounded in government-controlled parts of Syria, according to state media. Civil defense workers have reported more than 1,220 dead and more than 2,600 wounded in rebel-held territory in northwest Syria. said They expected to rise “significantly” as hundreds were buried under the rubble.
