Royals removed from their titles: Prince Andrew and beyond

Royal families are destined to serve as the nation’s beautiful brood, which is why it will come as a shock when their royal titles are removed.

Frequently, royalty members are stripped of their titles because they are involved in scandals, but sometimes the cause is less sensitive and as simple as a divorce.

At other times, laws and regulations have made royal titles and edits to families, meaning that some who once held their own titles no longer do.

Here’s a look at some of the most prominent royal members of recent history who lost their titles.

The royal title of Queen Elizabeth II’s second son, Prince Andrew, was removed on Thursday.

The 61-year-old royal’s relationship with disgraced financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became the focus of the scandal when it gained traction in the public eye.

Andrew is suing Virginia Roberts Giuffre for allegedly sexually assaulting her when she was just 17 years old. When the judge refused to dismiss the lawsuit, his mother gave him the ax.

Andrew had already withdrawn from his royal duties, but Buckingham Palace announced that as the lawsuit progressed, Andrew had been sidelined by his title of king and military.

Spain’s Infanta Cristina, formerly known as the Duchess of Palma de Mallorca, shook Spain for a decade until she became embroiled in a political corruption scandal.

Initially, the focus was solely on her husband, but eventually she was named a suspect in 2013 and charged with tax fraud and money laundering and ordered to appear in court. She argued that she was unaware of her husband’s illicit affairs.

In 2017, Christina was acquitted of the charges, though her husband was sent to prison.

Japanese law requires that members of an imperial family marry a commoner, stripped of their royal titles, as the pair had for distant relatives.

Perhaps most notable is the niece of Naruhito, the current Emperor of Japan and the eldest daughter of Japan’s Crown Prince Fumihito and Japan’s Crown Princess Kiko.

In October 2021, Mako married Kayi Komuro, an outlaw, thus depriving him of his royal titles. Formerly known as Her Imperial Highness Princess Mako, she is now formally known as Mrs Key Komuro or informally known as her own name, Mako Korumo.

Mako continues to marry a commoner, Ayako, formerly known as Her Imperial Highness Princess Ayako of Takamado. Her late father was a cousin of the former Emperor of Japan, Akihito, who left her son’s throne in 2019 due to her age and declining health.

When he married a common man named Key Moria in 2018, Ayako’s title was removed and formally known as Mrs Key Moriah.
