Sam Smith outdid his recent “Saturday Night Live” performance with “Unholy” co-star Kim Petras in a horror movie-inspired performance. Smith begins the song in red leather, circling a fleet of dancers who take Samara out of “The Ring,” before making Petras dance in a cage, accompanied by some domineering people in demon headdresses. Smith also donned a monstrous top hat, as giant flames heated up the stage.
Smith and Petras won the Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance earlier in the evening, and Petras gave an emotional speech.
“Sam kindly wanted me to accept this award because I am the first transgender woman to win this award,” she said as she was welcomed and many musicians in the crowd gave her a standing ovation. “I just want to thank all the incredible transgender legends before me who kicked those doors down so I could be here tonight. Sophie, my friend who passed away two years ago, who Told me it would happen and always believed in me. Thank you so much for your encouragement, Sophie. I adore you, and your inspiration will always be in my music.

In 2015, Smith won four Grammys, including Best New Artist, Pop Vocal Album for “In the Lonely Hour” and Song of the Year for “Stay With Me.”
While Petras hid under Smith’s fluffy pink dress during part of the pair’s “SNL” performance two weeks ago, the two took the stage together to perform their smash hit. As two prolific musicians, the duo set a historic precedent for the LGBTQ community, after their collaboration reached No. 1 on the Hot 100 chart.
Smith’s performance Sunday night follows her first performance at the 2015 ceremony when she performed her Grammy-winning song “She With Me” from her debut album “In The Lonely Hour.”
Although this is Smith’s seventh nomination, Petras received her first nod after releasing two studio albums and four EPs, including her latest EP “Slut Pop.” They were both nominated for ABBA’s “Don’t Shut Me Down”, Camila Cabello featuring Ed Sheeran for “Bam Bam”, Coldplay and BTS for “My Universe”, and Post Malone and Duja. Kate was nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “I Like You (A Happy Song).”
