Sam Smith on finally having the ‘opposite’ of body dysmorphia: ‘I look fabulous’


Sam Smith has finally conquered body dysmorphia after a lifelong struggle with accepting his appearance.

The “Unclean” singer, who identifies as non-binary and uses “he/they” pronouns, admitted it hasn’t been a smooth journey to self-acceptance.

“Within my industry, there’s definitely a question of, ‘What should a pop star be like?'” the Grammy winner told The Sunday Times, admitting she’s never conformed to the “norm”.

The “Mere Saath Raho” hitmaker decided to conquer her worst fears by posing topless for her new album “Gloria”.

Things took a turn for the better for Britt in 2018 during his “Thrill of It All” tour, when Smith began to see himself in a different light.

“When I was 25, I left the tour exhausted. I looked up to role models in the physical world. Every time I went to the pool, I felt self-conscious, but I found myself Forced to take off the top,” the singer recalled.

“It paid off because now I have the opposite of body dysmorphia. I look fantastic. I’m finally getting a tan. I’m tanned in places I’ve never tanned.

According to the Mayo Clinic, body dysmorphia is a mental health disorder in which a person cannot stop thinking about a perceived defect or flaw in their appearance.

After learning to love the skin she’s in, Smith became less concerned about what online trolls had to say about her.

“I get closer to who I am with every album,” the singer added, adding that her new album is inspired by the “feminine spirit within me.”

“I’m happier in my own skin. Gloria. I feel free, released from the pressure I had when I was young,” Smith said. “My mom says that, as I got older, I stopped caring what people thought. She tends to be right.”

Smith was recently defended by die-hard fans after backlash over the singer’s sexy, skin-baring outfits in her new music video for “I’m Not Here to Make Friends.”

In the visuals, the 30-year-old singer rocked a series of daring looks by designer Christian Cowan, ranging from a showgirl-worthy feathered headdress and high slit skirt to a bejeweled corset paired with matching nipple pasties.

Despite the music video’s playful tone, some critics were outraged, The clip is called “Bad and Evil”. And Blaming Smith “Wearing your sexuality like a cloak and waving it in everyone’s face.”
