Several people have been missing since the Merrivale road blast: sources

Sources tell CTV News that a building on the south end of Ottawa has not been found since Thursday’s explosion.

An explosion and a large fire at the Eastway Tank on Merrivale Road sent three people to hospital, in a serious condition.

On Thursday evening, police were asking all employees and families to attend the reunification center at Woodvale Pentecostal Church on Greenbank Road.

Multiple sources told CTV News Ottawa that several people were lost as of late Thursday night.

Ottawa Emergency Officers are set to deliver an update Friday morning at 9 p.m.

Police remained at the scene Friday morning. The Ministry of Labor and the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office are also investigating.

‘It was supposed to be an earthquake’

Flames and black smoke were seen coming from a commercial building on Merrivale Road around 1:30 Thursday afternoon.

Ottawa Fire Service officials have reported that 911 callers heard the explosion before they saw a 15-meter flame through the roof of the structure.

Coun. Tim Tierney said he was visiting the city of Ottawa, meters from the building when the fire started.

“At first I thought it was an earthquake. The ground was shaking and then all of a sudden, seconds later, I hear a bang,” Tierney told NewsTalk 580 CFRA’s Ottawa Now with Kristy Cameron.

The three were admitted to the hospital. Two of them were hospitalized in a critical condition while the other was in stable condition, a paramedic said.

One firefighter has also been treated for minor injuries.

The crew, who brought heavy equipment Thursday evening, set the fire ablaze. Paul Hutt, executive head of the Ottawa Fire Service, said there is no danger to area residents.

“As we put out the fire, the water flow will occur as a result of the water we put on the fire. I want to assure residents there is no concern – we have our HAZMAT team in place,” Hutt said Thursday.

According to the company’s website, Eastway Tank, Pump & Meter Ltd. Custom manufacturer of tank trucks for North America and international markets.

‘I hear a loud bang’

Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud “bang” before the fire started.

“I was serving a customer, finishing with her and I heard a loud bang. The next thing I knew was that there was a big cloud of black smoke,” said Jesse Headland, who works at the Francis Gas Bar.

“It’s coming up as ‘Yai Hai’ and finally I see some flames lurking behind the truck. Probably the biggest thing I’ve seen in my nine years working here.”

Amanda Fung, owner of Country Place Chinese Restaurant near the scene of the fire.

“I was sitting there eating my lunch and I could smell the smoke. When I went outside to look out the window I saw a lot of big flames.”
