Bollywood A-lister Shahid Kapoor made his streaming debut on Amazon’s Prime Video service with the crime thriller “Farzi”.
During his career, Kapoor has largely acted in films that have been critically acclaimed and commercially successful, including “Jab We Met,” “Kamini,” “Haider,” “Udta Punjab” and ” Padmaavat”, which works with India’s filmmaking talent. .
“Farzy” is helmed by the acclaimed “The Family Man” creator duo Raj Nidimuru and Krishna DK (together known as Raj & DK), who are the showrunners, directors and executive producers. Its screenplay is written by Sita R Menon and Suman Kumar along with Raj and DK. It is produced by the duo’s D2R Films.
The show began life as a feature film that the two were to make with Kapoor, but the story was too big to fit into the two-and-a-half-hour time frame.
“I realized there’s a lot of value attached to being part of a story that’s told over a long period of time. It allows you to go deeper into character for the filmmakers, and it creates such content. Which is more complete, immersive and experiential,” Kapoor said. Variety. “You feel like you’re seeing the world in a very detailed way, so I was very keen to do something like that, I wanted to do something that allowed me to play a role that was five and a half, six hours long. found.”
In “Farzi,” Kapoor plays Sunny, a street-smart Mumbai artist who joins his best friend Feroze (Bhawan Arora) to help his grandfather (Amul Palikar) run a revolutionary newspaper and printing press. tries to When all other avenues fail, Sunny, who can make flawless copies of works of art, and Feroze, a printing expert, decide to create banknotes. This brings them into the circle of policeman Michael (Tamil cinema star Vijay Sethupathi) and counterfeiting mafia don Mansoor (KK Menon). The cast also includes Rashi Khanna and Regina Cassandra in pivotal roles.
“Farzy” was a perfect template for us to talk about modern society, especially the middle class, the most neglected and the most angry segment – the most marginalized of society. About the big segment that is undervalued… and not, there’s a whole context of how much Mumbai, in particular, is our country – it’s a deeper idea in that,” Raj said. Variety.
The word ‘fake’ literally means fake and Raj says that beyond the word’s obvious association with forgery, the show looks at the fakeness within people.
Counterfeiting is a real problem that exists in the country and it is what we call a faceless crime – no one considers it a crime, it is certainly illegal, but no one can really pinpoint what it is. Damage happens, but only when the coffee is fake. Note, it can do a lot of damage,” DK said Variety.
Amul Palikar, who plays the role of the idealistic grandfather, epitomized the Indian middle class on screen in 1970s Hindi-language cinema and, like Raj and DK, played the everyman or “silent rebel” role. Had a very successful career. He has since become a filmmaker and is very selective about his acting roles. Pallekar admitted. The filmmakers were appreciative when Pallikar stayed on the set as an observer after parts of their scenes were completed and gave them hearty approval on their filming methods and also said that in the team How progressive they are because of the number of women.
Kapoor described Palikar as the “emotional anchor” of “Farzi”. “He was absolutely perfect for the part – he had the gravitas and the experience and the goodness and the integrity, the language, the face – what he’s done has added to the show,” Kapoor said. said “It was an honor to have him on the show and share screen space with the OG middle class good guy.”
Up next for Kapoor are two untitled films – a fast-paced action film from “Sultan” director Ali Abbas Zafar, set on One Night, an adaptation of the 2011 French thriller “Sleepless Night.” which was first adapted as a Tamil language film in India. “Thonga Vanam” (2015); And a high-concept quirky love story for Maddock Films, the producer of “Bhidiya”.
Raj and DK have series “Gulkanda Tales” coming up for Prime Video and “Guns and Roses” for Netflix. He is currently shooting the Indian installment of Russo Brothers’ “Citadel” for Prime Video.
“As soon as we are done with ‘Citadel’ we will have to move on to ‘The Family Man’ 3 because there are so many people asking for it,” said DK. “We’re eager to get going on that, too.”
“Farzy” runs from February 10.
