State of the Union 2023: Biden pays tribute to ‘my friend’ Paul Pelosi after hammer attack

President Biden on Tuesday paid tribute to former Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul Pelosi, who was injured in a home invasion last year and was present at the State of the Union address.

Biden used the State of the Union address to condemn political violence, specifically noting the January 6 attack on the US Capitol. He then added an attack on Pelosi in the fall of 2022.

“And then just a few months ago, an unprovoked Big Lie assailant unleashed political violence at the home of the then Speaker of the House of Representatives, using the same language used by insurgents as they stalked those halls and Slogans were raised on January 6.” said.

The suspected intruder — Canadian illegal immigrant David DePipe — admitted in an interview with San Francisco police that he asked to see then-House Speaker Pelosi.

“What’s going on, man?” an officer asked in recently released bodycam footage.

“Everything is good,” DePep replied as he and Pelosi each had one hand on the gavel.

“Drop the hammer!” said the officer.

“Um, no,” DePep replied before pulling the gavel from Pelosi. De Pape then took a swing at Pelosi with a hammer and knocked her down.

“There is a man here in this chamber tonight who bears the scars of this brutal attack,” Biden said Tuesday. “But he’s as tough and as strong and as flexible as they get. My friend Paul Pelosi.”

“Such a despicable act should never have happened. We must all speak out,” Biden said of the attack.

DePape pleaded not guilty to all state charges in the case, including attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and aggravated assault. He also pleaded not guilty to federal charges, including assault on a member of the immediate family of a federal official and attempted kidnapping of a federal official.
