Stephen Port: The first victim of the killer was overweight because police thought he was a gay sex worker, friends say

The police may have mistakenly considered the rapist and The serial assassin Stephen PortHis friends told the inquest that he was a gay sex worker because he died of the first gay drug overdose.

Fashion student Anthony Walgate, 23, found as a corpse Blushing, East London, 19 June 2014.

He was given a fatal overdose of GHB drug, Port, 46, who went on to kill three other homosexuals.

Investigations into the deaths of Mr Walgate, Gabriel Covary, 22, Daniel Whitworth, 21, and Jack Taylor, 25, began earlier this month.

Giving evidence via video link, China Dunning, who was a friend of Mr Walgate, said at his death trial he had previously discussed the GHB drug and had never had the risk of taking it.

“I was convinced that Anthony’s death was suspicious.

Miss Dunning added: “I was convinced it was Stephen Port’s actions. I was convinced he had increased his drink or something and it was suspicious.

Kiera Brennan, who was part of the same Friends Zone, told the court that Port felt “strongly” that Mr Walgate had been hurt.

Mr Walgate rarely worked as an escort and arranged to meet a port that used the pseudonym Joe Dean.

Ms Dunning reported that Mr Walgate had passed away two days later, with the name, address and date of birth provided by the port and his physical description.

In September 2014, as the investigation into Mr Walgate’s death continued, Miss Dunning told police she would not believe that GHB had been found in his body if he had found it on his own.

Asked how the police responded to her concerns that her friend’s death was suspicious, Mrs Dunning said: “She was professionally informed but I knew she was probably young, gay, and sexist. She was a worker, and I immediately thought, ‘Yes, they do drugs.’ , Or they agreed, or I thought they would take the risk.

“I want to convince them they shouldn’t have that rue model.”

The court read portions of an earlier statement in which Miss Brennan said she saw Mr Walgate as “a young man who distracts people for money” and that “they left him when they knew he was an escort.”

He told a trial jury at Barking Town Hall on Wednesday: “I don’t think it’s actively against gay people.

“But I think that unconscious bias and assumptions have been made because of the work Anthony was doing because of Anthony’s sexuality.

“I certainly think it has affected how things were or were not conducted.”

Port initially pretended not to know Mr Walgate when he was questioned by police and was jailed in 2015 for corrupting the course of justice for the lies he told about his death.

When Ms Dunning appeared in court for her sentencing, she, Miss Brennan and Mr Walgate’s stepfather, Sami Sack, urged the attending officer to check the port’s laptop but the procedure was said to be costly.

The judge read a statement in which Miss Dunning recalled what she told the detective: “We said this guy was a f *** ing cheater. He did something to Anthony.

Ms Brennan told the court: “We obviously have correspondence between the devices, the port laptop, the mobile phone. You have to go and get it.

“Why don’t you go get it?”

Port murdered its victims between June 2014 and September 2015.

They met him through dating apps like Grindr, luring him to his flat in Barking, east London.

In 2016, Port was described by a judge as “evil and monstrous,” guilty of all four murders and sentenced to life in prison.

He was convicted of a string of sex offenses and is likely to die in prison.

With the harbor’s punishment, the families of the victims continue to campaign for answers as to why the port was not stopped quickly.

The Met Police have been accused of a series of failures in the case, which they denied.

The trial continues.
