‘Ted Lasso’ season two review: Proof that football can be a force for good

bbetween the first and second seasons of Appleof nutritious football comedy ted lassoSome incredible things happened in the real world. First, the show received A Historic 20 Emmy Nominations – Unheard of until then for a TV series in his freshman year. Secondly, and significantly: England made it to the final of their first men’s football tournament in 55 years, losing to Italy at Wembley at the Euros. They too would have won, if it weren’t for a pesky penalty shootout.

ted lasso A fictional Premier League team, AFC Richmond, and Titanic is about an American football coach who—who has no prior experience in what he calls “soccer”—is tasked with coaching him to greatness. It didn’t really matter if you weren’t into football, the first episode was more interested in teamwork, kindness, and camaraderie. That’s the belief in season two, but it also feels terrifying and especially moving forward when we’ve seen Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Bukayo Saka speak for many of the same things. Show creator and star Jason Sudeikis clearly knows this: At the most recent premiere, he wore a sweatshirt bearing the names of those three players. (who missed the decisive England penalty and suffered a subsequent barrage of racist abuse) shone across it.

but the best bits ted lassoThe return is what echoes the bravery of the heroes of England. The third episode pits defender Sam Obisnya against one of Richmond’s sponsors, following his suspicious actions in his native Nigeria. “I’m not here to talk about football,” he says at a news conference. It is impossible not to think of Marcus Rashford, who has been fighting tirelessly against racism, homelessness and child hunger in Britain. Difference? Sam hasn’t been told to concentrate “Punishment, not politics” Rashford was like that. Instead, Ted and the entire Richmond team rally around him.

ted lasso is about more than just football: in season two we get to know the players better for their strength and their fearlessness, and we grace them with sympathetic, hopeful storylines that tell us – like Shaq said only last week – He wins love.
