The 1975 announced as Record Store Day ambassadors for 2023


1975 has been announced as the ambassador for Record Store Day 2023.

The band will fly the flag for the annual event – which takes place on Saturday, April 22 – where hundreds of UK independent record shops celebrate their culture with a number of exclusive vinyl releases and in-shop performances.

As part of their role, the Manchester band will release a live performance with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra on vinyl for the first time on this year’s Record Store Day.

Re-recorded in 2016, the double LP features track favorites from the band’s early career, including ‘Somebody Alice’, ‘Chocolate’ and ‘The Sound’. The release will only be available at participating record stores.

Speaking about the honour, frontman Matty Healy said: “The boys and I are really proud to be ambassadors for Record Store Day this year. Independent record stores are the lifeblood of the music industry and they’ve been part of our story so far. has played an important role. Supporting their important community and culture could not be more important.

The band will follow previous ambassadors including Taylor Swift – who was announced as Record Store Day’s first global ambassador last year – Noel Gallagher, The Big Moon and Elton John.

1975’s latest album, Being Funny in a Foreign Language, was released on a special white vinyl specially made for record stores, with Kingston’s Banquet Records the night before the album came out. I with an intimate show.

Louise Jackson, from Bury vinyl store Wax & Beans, said of the announcement: “We can’t wait to take part in Record Store Day again this year and have a Manchester band like 1975 putting our local musical heritage on the map. And to celebrate the culture of record shops like this is fantastic.

Bands like The 1975 are our favorites across the country. As products of independent music scenes that support emerging talent, it’s great to see them winning over indie record shops like ours in such a meaningful way.”

In other vinyl news, it was revealed last month that vinyl has outsold CD for the first time in 35 years, with sales rising to £150.5 million in 2022, as CD album sales fell to £124 million.
