How do you feel about losing the two-time Cy Young Award winner?

Another ace, three-time Cy Young Award winner, two-time World Series champion and one of the greatest pitchers of our generation.

Steve Cohen announced the signing of Justin Verlander on Monday after Jacob deGrom decided to sign with the Rangers. Verlander will be 40 next season, but he’s still at the top of his game, winning the AL Cy Young with the Astros last season and helping the team to the World Series. Verlander would make the Mets a better team and give them a chance to make a name for themselves in 2023 and 2024.

To react to the Verlander signing, deGrom’s move to the Rangers, and a preview of what else the Mets might do in free agency, we bring you an extraordinary episode of the Amazin’ But True podcast featuring Nelson Figueroa and myself.

Cool but True Podcast with Jake Brown and Nelson Figueroa:

  • VERLANDER A STUD: Sure, $86 million is a lot of money, but Steve Cohen has it. Two years of Verlander made more sense than five years of deGrom.
  • DEGONE: DeGrom obviously didn’t like playing in New York. He wanted more money and maybe he would enjoy living somewhere. The Rangers had a five-year deal with an option for a sixth year, and he received $188 million.
  • WHY: Should the Mets give Brandon Nimmo a big contract? He’s a great player, but is he worth a 6-year, $150 million contract? The central field market is very thin, so they can pay to return it.
  • FREE AGENCY: Should the Mets sign another outfielder? Do they go with Brett Baty and Eduardo Escobar at third base? What to do with the other spots in the rotation? Taillon? To you? Rodon? Bassitt? Walker?
