The GOP speaker race has “embarrassed” the nation, says a 60 Minutes reporter

Leslie Stahl of “60 Minutes” spoke to Americans on Sunday and said that the race for speaker among Republicans in Congress is a “historic mess” and an embarrassment for the United States.

“Last week’s historic mess in the House of Representatives embarrassed not only the party, but the entire nation,” Stahl said.

California Republican Congressman Kevin McCarthy won his hard-fought bid to become House Speaker on January 7th after five days of debate.

The GOP 20 — a group some critics have dubbed the “Taliban 20” — refused to vote until McCarthy met their demands for votes on bills related to border security and abortion, among other issues.

Stahl expressed disbelief in the House’s debate process.

“A small minority prevented the House from electing a leader or even swearing in its members.”

He continued: “Vote after vote for the incoming speaker could not bring themselves to stand up for their colleague.”

Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla. and even former President Donald Trump could replace McCarthy in the speaker race.

But Stahl, a staunch Trump critic and longtime CBS correspondent during the Carter and Reagan years, acknowledged the so-called “chaos” in the House for “a few days in January.”

He said the congressional speaker race casts doubt on Republicans’ ability to govern.

“However, if the incoming majority of members of the party cannot bring themselves to support the new leader,” Stahl added, “then Congress will have to make tough decisions on the budget, taxes, defense or raising the debt ceiling. the question arises as to what happens when decisions are made: actually the manager.”
