The Jets may have to spend to fix historically bad defenses

The Bills steamrolled the Jets 45-17 on Sunday at MetLife Stadium. Here are some thoughts and observations from the game:

1. The Jets defense has historically been worse. This is embarrassing for Robert Saleh, who earned his reputation in the NFL coaching defense. The Jets have conceded 54, 31, 45 and 45 points in their last four games. It’s unbelievable how bad it is.

Here’s the thing: It’s not just a quick fix.

The Jets need good players. From there it starts. Jets GM Joe Douglas knew he couldn’t fill every hole on the Jets roster this offseason. He chose not to deal with the cornerback except for a few third-day draft picks. That decision looked poor on a Sunday when Josh Allen was throwing at will against the Jets secondary. You cannot say that Douglas ignored the defense. His biggest addition to the defense was Carl Lawson, who had some bad luck when he suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in the pre-season. But it is clear that the Jets prioritized the offense in the offseason and that is understandable. He wanted to give Zach Wilson some playmakers and defenders, something he failed to do with Sam Darnold.

This offseason defense needs to be corrected. He needs to draft the cornerback quickly and possibly sign one of the free agency. He should address linebacker and safety and add depth to the defensive line. The Jets may need to spend the offseason on defense. That’s the opposite of what Douglas preached, but desperate times make desperate GMs.

It’s still months away. At present, Saleh and defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbricht have to do everything to help their players. He was very committed to his plan on Sunday and Stephen Diggs was incompatible with his young cornerbacks when they lined up against each other. After the game, Saleh said he did not believe the cornerbacks were following wide receivers, but they had to put Bryce Hall on the digs when they saw Allen target the javelin guide. “Players over scheme” is a common mantra around the NFL. Saleh must now accept that and design his plan to suit his players, not force his players to fit his plan. This offseason could be about finding players that fit his scheme.

Saleh can’t completely fix this in the remaining eight games, but he needs protection to show some improvement.

2. The defense can get some help from the offense. The jets are able to run the ball, control the clock and keep the defense off the field. The Jets offense has shown some signs of life lately but they still can’t run the ball. He rushed for 70 yards on Sunday and failed to break 100 yards in every game but one this season.

The No. 1 player in the NFL The game plan was raging against the Bills, which had 1 pass defense. In the first half, the Jets threw the ball 22 times and ran the ball just eight times. The game was still close at the time, so they didn’t need to throw in to get quick points. It makes no sense against that defense as the quarterback throws his third start.

Mike LaFleur and Run Game Coordinator John Benton need to find some answers in the Running Game, not only to improve the offense but also to help with the hurt defense.

3. The Jets have had some bad scheduling luck lately. Their last four losses have come to teams who were coming off a loss the week before and looking to “get right” against the Jets. The bills are the latest. They lost to the Jaguars 9-6 last week. That certainly helped the Bills focus on the Jets, and the angry Buffalo team played like Sunday. The Colts lost to the Titans before facing the Jets. The Patriots lost to the Cowboys before the Jets were defeated. The Falcons lost to Washington before defeating the Jets in London.

The Jets defeated the Bengals, who may have been riding high after their win over the Ravens. For the Jets, they want to see opposing fighting teams. It’s not a good place to be. The good news for the Jets is that their next opponent, the Dolphins, had a big win against the Ravens on Thursday night. Maybe the Jets catch the over-confident Miami team.

4. Something struck me after Sunday’s loss. There was a time when the Jets felt that such losses were catastrophic. The next day the sky was falling. Now? It’s like normal. Numbness occurs when jets fly. I think back on some bad losses under Rex Ryan or Todd Bowles, and the next day people were screaming that the coach should be sacked or the quarterbacks should be benchmarked. Fans are upset after Sunday’s defeat but there is also an acceptance of the Jets. They are not a good team and I think the fans have accepted this fact. That is not to say that they are happy. They are not. But it is no longer shocking to see the jets explode. This is not good growth for the organization.

Disclosure of statistics

The Jets have allowed 1,890 yards in their last four games. According to ESPN, it has allowed more yards in jets history.

Amazing snap count

DE Ronald Blair played 30 snaps (52 percent) in the first order of the season. The Jets are now looking for some pass rushers in the IR, along with Carl Lawson’s pre-season loss.

The game ball

No one on the Jets deserves a play ball after that. I give this to Jets fans. He filled the building on Sunday and was disappointed. I have no idea how loyal you fans are from year to year when the team loses.
