The Mets’ starling marte has always wanted to play with Robinson Cano

Sure, there are 78 million reasons to choose the Mets for Starling Marte.

There was a long-held promise to join another star of the Dominican Republic.

“I always say I want to be his teammate,” Marte said of Robinson Cano on Wednesday. “And now that I have the opportunity to do so, I decided to take it.”

The Mets inked the center fielder, who was hitting .310 last season with a .383 on-base percentage and 47 steals between Miami and Oakland.

But Marte clearly enjoys the return of the infielder, who was suspended last season after testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug.

Although they did not discuss the prospect of this offseason, Marte said the two have long talked about joining. Once Marte signed with the Mets, the two got in touch.

“They sent me a message and we talked a little bit,” Marte said through interpreter Alan Suriel. “I’m always looking forward to having a conversation with him and learning from him.”

Moving around the outfield and plans to become the Mets ‘leadoff hitter, Marte said he is happy with the many Latinos in the Mets’ clubhouse.

It was not a team player but it helped mark Mark Canha.

November. On the 22nd, Sandy Alderson boarded a flight from Florida to Phoenix and the two could hire a nearby canha to meet Billy Eppler. This was the only personal visit with the Canha team.

“Nobody else did that, so it was big for me,” said Canha, a former Oakland A player who overcame Alderson. “I didn’t think much about it at the time. But after the meeting, I was like, ‘Man, I’m really glad they did.’ ”

However, none of the seven-year pro 645 games have come against the Mets. He said he didn’t know much about the club.

“The Mets shouldn’t be favorites before that meeting,” Canha said. “And then after that meeting, he was one of the favorites.”

Canha’s former team in Oakland currently has about $ 71 million in projected payroll by 2022, less than Marte did during his four seasons with the Mets.

“I used to be a little less exciting in the offseason with my former team, so it was kind of crazy,” he said of the Mets out in the millions. “It’s very new to me and very exciting.”
