On Monday, the New York Times named Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman as one of its 93 “most stylish” people of 2022, prompting backlash on social media, including from the Democrat’s wife.
“No, no [John Fetterman]!! Count again!!!, Gisele Fetterman, the wife of the elected senator wrote Twitter reacted in disbelief to the praise on Monday.
News fed Fetterman, who wore his usual campaign attire of a hoodie, basketball shorts and sneakers, said as a lawmaker he wanted to “bring Carhartt to the Capitol,” a reference to the US workwear clothing company.
“Totally liberal bias, [the New York Times]â ©!†Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) jokingly wrote on Twitter. “Not only did I bring the best hairdos to Congress [Carharttâ©] to Capitol Hill four years ago.â€
“How [the New York Times] Would you justify putting John Fetterman on the same list as the late Queen Elizabeth? †Sheridan Nolen, Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R), said on Twitter.
“What…[the New York Times] smoking?†Nachama Soloveitchik, DC political consultant, wrote unsure.
Others on social media took the opportunity to take shots at Fetterman’s unique choice.
“No one can believe that Fetterman is really modern. He dresses like someone who hangs around a vape shop or convenience store all day – John Hawkins wrote in a tweet.
“2022 is the year of the Goblin Regime. Dress like a bum and make the NYT’s Most Stylish People list,” Journalist Ian Miles Cheong thought.
The retired lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania wasn’t the only Beltway type or political leader to make the list.
Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson also listed her personal jewelry with the paper, citing it as a notable accessory.
“The Supreme Court’s Newest Justice Brought Necklaces to the Marble Palace,” said the New York Times.
New York Mayor Eric Adams (D) has “it,” according to the New York Times style table, ranking in the top 93.

While Vice President Kamala Harris was not included on the list, her stepdaughter Ella Emhof did, with the newspaper playing up her “caricature-like personal style.”
“Even the orbit of the buttoned-up White House, where Ms. Emhoff’s stepmother serves as vice president, can’t keep the knitwear designer and IMG model from her caricatured personal style,” writes The New York Times.
Fetterman, Jackson, Adams and Emhoffs joined the list of entertainment stars including Rihanna, Ben Affleck, Timothee Chalamet, Lil Nas X, Anne Hathaway and Brad Pitt.
“Love them or hate them, they all have at least one thing in common. In the past 12 months, they’ve made us talk about how we dress, how we live and how we choose to express ourselves. We welcome feedback. But we are definitely right,” the newspaper said about its 93 selections.
