The boxed cake mix is Pioneer Woman-approved. Food Network host Ree Drummond leading lady, is no stranger to using boxed cake mix. However, the food blogger-turned-food-network star puts her own spin on it. She likes to “doctor” the cake mix with a few choice ingredients for more flavor.
Ree Drummond considered boxed cake mix a ‘little cop-out’
The Pioneer Woman is the first to admit that she hasn’t always been a fan of boxed cake mixes. In an episode of her cooking show Drummond making cakes using store-bought mixes, she said she once saw them as a way to get out of making homemade cakes.
“There must have been a time in my life when, I wouldn’t say I judged my use of cake mixes, but I thought they were a little cop at one point in my life,” she said.
Needless to say, she doesn’t feel that way anymore.

Over time or perhaps just a great tasting cake from boxed mix Drummond is now a big fan of cake mixes.
“I love cake mix-based cakes these days,” she said while making Clementine Sprinkle Cakes at her farm in Pawuska, Oklahoma. The Pioneer Woman dessert begins with none other than boxed cake mix (this particular recipe calls for vanilla confetti mix).
“I think they are wonderful,” she said. “Especially if you doctor them up with advanced ingredients — enter Clementine — they can be really, really special.”
Drummond makes boxed cake mix that she uses as the base for her Clementine Sprinkle Cake flavor. A little more homemade with fresh clementines. She adds zest and juice to the batter, making sure to save a few slices for decorating the top of the cake.
