If Artemy Panarin and Ryan Strom are notch, bread and butter, what is Adam Fox and Ryan Lindgren?
Peanut butter and jelly?
Well, he’s a Rangers matchup pair on defense, that’s Fox and Lindgren … except those games when they’re not.
Because the symbiotic pair has reduced the effects of its relatively short stature — Fox is listed at 5-foot-11, Lindgren 6-1 — to increase its effectiveness, coach Gerard Gallant said Wednesday, the opponent’s physical makeup can affect him K’Andre Miller-Jacob Switch to the Trouba Tandem. Miller is listed at 6-4, Trouba 6-3.
“You want your top guys on the ice, but we’re going to see the top guys against some teams and they’re going to play against someone,” Gallant said. “Maybe we’d better fit in with K’Andre and Trub, where different teams have different adjustments.
“Obviously size makes a difference when you play in your own zone, and hopefully we play more and more in the other zone, but it definitely makes a difference.”
Remember this, even though Lindgren is playing the same size as Jeff Beukboom: Nils Lundqvist, the right-hander of the third pair is listed at 5-11 but Acock Jones is still vying for the spot, listed at 5-10.
There you will understand why the Blueshirts signed 6-4 Patrick Nemeth and 6-6 Jared Tinordi as free-agent defensemen.
Fox and Lindgren were injured 48 times in the first 51 games of last season, forcing the club to merge. This represents the duo’s – and Fox’s – se tau’s second game.
“I want to get into the mentality of a regular-mentor,” Fox said. “The wins and losses aren’t important, but this is the first time everyone has a new system, so we need to learn a bit better as a group and understand how everyone plays.”
Gallant emphasized new puck pressure, puck pursuit and puck support on the ice. It’s not just about pushing one way. This is not about recklessness, though the coach is encouraging his defense to join the rush and play as safety warrants.
“I’m not a big believer in high-risk gambling plays. I don’t like that,” Koch said.
“I mean, you can’t jump off the blue line and get into a rush when it’s a high-risk game and your back doesn’t defend and take it back [defensive] The blue line is far away. You need to make sure you know what’s going on in the play and if there is a chance to jump, jump, but not if it’s a high risk game. The last thing you want is to skip two-on and three-on the other way.
The Rangers do not want to give up their rivalries in a way that has often followed the last several seasons under Galant’s immediate predecessors, Alain Vigneault and David Quinn. It was never planned but turned into a daily fee because of the negligence of the large number of forwards over backlash.
“We want to play tight gaps and be available, but the great thing about it is you can play tight gaps when back-checkers come back and work hard,” Gallant said. “You can play any system you want, but if you don’t work hard and compete hard and help your teammates on defense, you’re going to have a tough night.”
Fox is coming off the Norris Trophy season, in which he became the second-year defender, and won the title in 1968 after Bobby Orr. Lindgren, who was also a NHL sophomore a year ago, made a dramatic move to raise her to a top pairing.
“The big thing for me this summer is working on my shot,” the disgusting number 55 said. “Management has said that I have to work from last year. I have worked on my skating, which I think has improved from year to year.
“Getting the puck is a big thing. The boys do a good job of getting into the lanes and blocking shots, so I worked on getting the puck and releasing it quickly.”
Quickly on one end, out of sight on the other. PB & J. Adjustable pair, except when not present.
