Titans’ recent interview with Monti Ossenfort

The Giants did not forget to cancel the interview of general-manager candidate Monty Osenfort after the sacking of head coach Joe Judge.

Due to his tight relationship with the judges, Dave Gettleman acted as one of the co-favorites last year to replace him, and Ossenfort’s resume deserves consideration on its own merits. After all, Oceanport was a finalist in the Browns’ GM search in 2020 – the job went to Andrew Berry, but the competition included now-Vikings GM George Patton – and he was one of four finalists on the 15-candidate search. The Panthers in 2021. The other three are part of the Giants field.

“Monty is a very good data-giver. When he enters college, he has a lot of respect because he knows he’s credible,” a league source familiar with Ossenfort told The Post. “They’re good managers and talent evaluators. They sit and listen, but they have [guts] The decision should not be disrespectful and disrespectful to the people who informed him.

The three-day setup of Giants co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch, and Chris Mara, senior director of players, must have created a strange dynamic while at Titans Bye in Nashville, Tenn. As the top seed in the AFC playoffs.

Titans vice president of Titans player Ryan Cowden, who came to the post of Washington GM in 2021, was interviewed Friday by Osenfort after a man directly above the corporate hierarchy. Then he was brought to Oceanport (a former eight-year-old colleague) in 2020, when Osenfort’s contract with the Patriots was about to expire and Bill Belichick could no longer prevent this move.

“Johnny Robinson is the most sought-after man in the last one and a half years,” the source said. “They have a great relationship with a head coach, whether they know it or not, and what kind of personality they have. When players perform poorly, the GM who blames things on the head coach – or when one talks about the other – always fails.

Ossenfort spent six seasons as the Patriots director of college scouting as Robinson’s successor. His tenure overlaps with the Patriots’ draft-and-development strategy, but the tape-grinders in the chambers with Oceanport speak highly of his valuation acumen. The Titans rely heavily on Ossenfort’s draft.

“Monty is a solid scout and he comes from a background of details,” another league source said. “No one on the Giants’ list has ever selected or made the final decision.”

Many of the candidates commanding interviews for the other seven head-coaching positions in the NFL do not need to be introduced to Ossenfort. The Giants wait for GM to start interviews for the replacement, but former Dolphins head coach Brian Flores, Bills offensive coordinator Brian Dobol, Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and Patriots linebackers coach Jerrod Mayo are all over New Zealand.

While Belichick’s coaching tree is filled with head-coaching misses, Robinson, Super Bowl-winning Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht, and former Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff have had more exciting results. Other recent recruits include Bob Quinn, who was sacked by the Lions last season and will be replaced by Texans’ Nick Caserio, who will replace the second head coach in as many seasons.

“They have their own merits,” the first source said. “Monty has a Boston background to manage the big market and do his job.”

Cowden spent most of his career (16 years) in scouting for the Panthers and was promoted to assistant director when he was the GM … Gettleman of the Panthers. But that association, while not popular among Giants fans, should have no bearing because Brandon Bean, Gettleman’s right-hand consultant with the Panthers, is a successful GM with the Bills.

The Giants face off on Saturday with Ravens Director of Scouting Joe Hartiz and assistant GM Adam Peters and a pair of 49ers.
