Traveling in or within Canada? The rules have changed. here’s what you need to know

Passport? Check. plane ticket? Check. What about your vaccination documents and COVID-19 test results? Due to the pandemic, there is now a long list required to return home from overseas travel.

“You definitely have to be prepared and it’s not going to be a normal experience,” said Toronto’s Senka Dukovic, who flew home from Croatia earlier this month.

Domestic travelers may also face challenges when entering some provinces.

Here’s what you need to know about traveling in or within Canada, with the help of some Canadians who have already hit the road.

before returning to canada

Although fully vaccinated Canadians Now you can leave quarantine Upon their return to Canada, they still face other requirements.

Dukovich, her husband Ted Reid and her five-year-old granddaughter Ksenija Callaghan traveled to Croatia to visit family in June. He had a two-day stopover in Paris before his final flight to Canada on 7 July.

France Passengers are required to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test upon arrival, but Dukovich and her husband were exempt by showing proof of their COVID-19 vaccinations. Kesenija was also exempted because of her age.

“Countries’ rules can change,” Dukovic said. “I did a lot of research to choose my flight path.”

However, all three had to undergo a COVID-19 test in Paris before boarding home for their final flight.

Travelers traveling to Canada – even those who have been fully vaccinated – have to give evidence A negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours of arrival. Air travelers must take the test within 72 hours of the scheduled departure time of their last direct flight to Canada.

Dukovich was pleased to learn that – at the time – France provided free PCR tests.

“We got three COVID tests [for free] Which will cost at least $400,” she said. “No hassle, no waiting, no appointment.”

However, Canadians moving to Canada now may not be so lucky; country on 7th July stopped giving Free trial for tourists from outside the EU.

Travelers traveling to Canada must submit their travel information to the federal government using the information arrivacan app or by online registration Within 72 hours of their arrival.

“You had to upload documents for both your first and second doses,” said Dukovich, who submitted the family’s application from a hotel room in Paris. “We just had our phone, so you can imagine, trying to do that on a smaller phone.”

Upon arrival

When travelers have finished entering their information, they are emailed a receipt to show to the Canadian border officer along with their COVID-19 test results and any vaccination documents.

On July 9, Sean Planke, a Canadian living in Barcelona, flew to Halifax with his wife and three children. He advises travelers to pack hard copies of their documents before departing for Canada.

“I know it’s going against society these days, but take a print out of it,” he said. “I didn’t want to flip through my phone [for documents]”

Both land and air travelers will be tested for COVID-19 upon arrival in Canada, or given a home test kit. The federal government provides the test for free and travelers can pre register Online to save time.

Dukovich and his family landed in Montreal. She said they got home testing kits instead of on-site testing, as they had a connecting flight to Toronto.

“On the way out, they gave us kits like they were giving you lunch boxes,” said Dukovich.

At home, Dukovich said, she had to go online and be guided via video conference by a nurse who gave instructions, “to count the seconds to hold a swab in her nose”.

That same day, Purolator picked up the tests.

traveling with kids

Fully vaccinated passengers do not need to quarantine while awaiting their test results. But Dukovich thought she and her husband needed it, because their five-year-old granddaughter – who lives with them – hLOVEBYLIFE’t been vaccinated.

Children under the age of 12 are not allowed to be vaccinated in Canada.

Only three days after the quarantine, Dukovich learned from the quarantine officer that only his granddaughter was to be quarantined.

“It was a relief,” said Dukovich. “My husband and I are free to go out.”

unvaccinated travelers – or those who have currently received the vaccine not recognized By the Government of Canada – must be quarantined for 14 days. Those entering by air will also have to spend three of those days in a quarantine hotel at his own expense.

However, unvaccinated children under the age of 18 can go home with their vaccinated parents. But they have to quarantine – even if their parents leave the house.

But that’s not the message Planke said he got when he and his family landed in Halifax after taking a connecting flight to Montreal. Planke and his wife have been fully vaccinated, but they do not have three children. Still, he said a provincial representative at Halifax airport insisted that the entire family be exempted from quarantine.

“My wife is like, ‘But realize we’re not just flying from Montreal, we’re flying from Spain. And she said, ‘No, no, it doesn’t matter, all five of you are fine.’ “

Planke then called the federal government’s COVID-19 line and learned that his three children should be quarantined.

travel within canada

The rules can be complicated for domestic travelers as well.

Air travelers traveling within Canada do not have to take a pre-arrival COVID-19 test.

However, Nova Scotiahandjob new Brunswickhandjob Prince Edward Islandhandjob Newfoundland and Labradorhandjob Manitoba And regions still need to quarantine some inter-provincial travelers.

Rules may vary depending on your vaccination status and/or where you are traveling from. For example, most Atlantic provinces now allow travelers from Atlantic Canada to enter, regardless of their vaccination status.

The rest of Canada can skip the quarantine in the Atlantic provinces if fully vaccinated or, in the case of New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador, at least one dose. (Note: The PEI exemption for vaccinated travelers does not apply until Sunday.)

Fully vaccinated travelers can skip quarantine in Manitoba and territories.

The provinces of Manitoba, Yukon and the Atlantic also exempt unvaccinated children under the age of 12 from quarantine – if all of their immunizations meet the parental exemption requirement. In Nova Scotia, the rule applies to unvaccinated children age 18 and younger.

“It’s quite confusing,” Plank said. But he said he understands why his children traveling internationally must comply with federal quarantine rules.

“The last thing we want to do is go through our travels because of COVID.”

The provinces and territories listed here may have further requirements for tourists, so travelers to those regions should check the rules online before packing their bags.

For example, the Atlantic provinces require some visitors to pre-register, and travelers to Nunavut must first obtain authorization. In addition, the Northwest Territories still hold most leisure travelers.
