Ortega believes the Aussie is doing his best to portray him in a bad light. On the latest episode of TUF, Ortega said:
“He [Alexander Volkanovski] Sh*t wants to start speaking and… Basically, he’s been trying to turn me into the bad guy throughout this show… He’s getting upset. He’s trying, like, trying to turn the team against me or, just, trying to play small cards to try to make me look bad.”
The statement came after Alexander Volkanowski and Brian Ortega had another back-and-forth in the presence of the UFC president dana white and their respective teams.
What led to the argument between Alexander Volkanowski and Brian Ortega?
Miles Hunsinger from Team Ortega and Gilbert Urbina from Team Volcanowski had to contend inside the cage. Unfortunately, Hunsinger developed a hyperextension in his knee during a mild sparring session.
The doctor’s diagnosis revealed that Hunsinger’s knee was suffering from a grade 2 MCL strain. Ultimately, Hunsinger received permission from doctors to enter the competition. However, the risk of multiplying knee damage was extremely strong, as evidenced by the medical staff.
After consultation with Brian Ortega and other coaches, Hunsinger decided to withdraw from the bout.
As the two teams lined up inside Apex Gym, Alexander Volkanowski seemed irritable to wait for the fight to begin. Breaking his silence and addressing Briana Ortega, Alexander Volkanovsky said:
“What are you so happy and irritable about? We’ve been waiting this whole time and that [Brian Ortega] Laughing like nothing is happening. We heard whispers that it could be the same, but the way you’re headed, there’s no way someone gets injured. It just shows up again. Shows you how sh*t you are…showing true colors.”
Speaking in his defense, Ortega resisted Volkanowski’s attack, questioning whether a good coach would let an injured fighter compete. Volkanovsky, in turn, clarified that entering a wounded fighter into the cage was not the subject of his argument.
The constant back-and-forth between Ortega and featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovsky is only going to escalate as the show continues.
TUF is finally laying the groundwork for an epic rivalry that will reach the canvas at UFC 266.
