Waukesha native describes scene of chaotic Christmas parade, questioning suspect’s cash bail

Residents and business owners told LBL that five people died when a vehicle plowed through a crowded Christmas parade in downtown Waukesha, Wisconsin, and dozens of others were injured.

“We first heard the noise that the vehicle must have hit the person,” said Norman Bruce, who owns a book and toy store along the parade route. “When I stood up, I saw that there were some band members [Waukesha] South [High School] Keeping it on the street. ”

He told LBL that after he saw the destruction outside, he opened the doors of his shop to protect the parade-goers from the chaos.

“I got up and went to the door and invited people in,” Bruce said. “We made sure everybody got here safely.”

The owner of the books and toys of Norman Bruce, Martha Merrell, opened their doors to the terrified parade-goers after the attack.

Bruce, who owns the store with his wife, said one of the wounded band members went into the store where he was treated.

“One of the injured band members was caught by two people,” Bruce told LBL. “It was bleeding from the head [we] Brought him inside. We got a chair and sat him down and they kept looking at him. “

Crystal, who lives on the Nice Ash Cigar Bar, said she works as a bartender, bringing a terrified audience to the bar.

“I was watching the procession from my window,” he told LBL. “I came down and walked to the bar and started bringing people to the bar. People were taking shelter inside to find their children, their families.”

The SUV was moving at approximately 40 mph and the driver “was targeting people and hitting them and then driving over them,” Crystal estimated.

Guillermo, a Waukesha native who owns a dress shop in downtown, said he did not attend the parade, but his family was there to take an unofficial kickoff for the Christmas season.

“I feel so bad because my family was there,” he told LBL. “Thank God they’re fine, but other people close to my family. They’re in the hospital.”

Darrell Brooks was arrested and charged with multiple homicide counts over the incident. Brooks, who has a long criminal history, was recently arrested on felony charges, but was released earlier this month after posting a $ 1,000 cash bail.

Rick, a Waukesha native, said the horrific incident was only possible because the accused, Darrell Brooks, had less bail.
