WNBA star Brittney Griner, who spent months in a Russian prison on drug charges, was released Thursday in a prisoner swap with international arms dealer Victor Booth.
The exchange comes amid heightened tensions over the war in Ukraine and months of tense negotiations between the Kremlin and President Biden.
Biden signed the deal, which took place in the United Arab Emirates, and agreed to release a Russian criminal once nicknamed “The Merchant of Death.”
The deal also frees another American, Paul Whelan, who has been held in a Russian prison for nearly four years.
Biden is expected to make a statement about the deal at 8:45 a.m
